“Shoemaker’s paintings are primarily concerned with the emotional quality of activating color and paint texture but go further to define space and a literal landscape by the inclusion of a moon or figures. The emphatic “Vertigo” and “Mirage,” however, are moving and strongly hued paintings of sensation, not only depicting but evoking it. The one leaves you reeling; the other rubbing your eyes. Shoemaker has shown at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil and the Corcoran Biennial and has had one-man shows at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the S.F. Museum of Art and Gump’s”
